About This Course

Overview

Nestled along the pristine, sun-drenched Kohala Coast of Hawaii's Big Island, the Mauna Kea Golf Course stands as a monument to golf architecture and a testament to the vision of its creators. More than just a golf course, Mauna Kea is a revered institution, a pioneering force in Hawaiian resort golf, and a masterpiece envisioned by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr. since its opening in 1964. This iconic 18-hole layout is not merely played; it is experienced, offering a dramatic journey across volcanic terrain, through lush tropical landscapes, and alongside the breathtaking Pacific Ocean. For any golfer seeking the quintessential Hawaiian golf adventure, the Mauna Kea Golf Course promises a challenge as profound as its beauty, forever etched in the annals of golf history, particularly for its world-famous par-3 over the ocean.

Course History & Heritage

The story of the Mauna Kea Golf Course is deeply intertwined with the vision of Laurance S. Rockefeller, the conservationist and venture capitalist who sought to create a luxury resort in harmony with Hawaii's natural splendor. In the early 1960s, Rockefeller commissioned Robert Trent Jones Sr., one of the most influential golf course architects of all time, to sculpt a championship course out of the raw, untamed lava fields of the Kohala Coast. This was an audacious undertaking, transforming a rugged, barren landscape into verdant fairways and manicured greens. Jones Sr. himself famously declared it his 'greatest challenge.'

Opened in 1964, the Mauna Kea Golf Course was groundbreaking, not only as one of the very first resort courses in the Hawaiian Islands but also for its audacious design that embraced, rather than fought against, the dramatic topography. It immediately set a new standard for golf in paradise, attracting discerning golfers and quickly earning its place among the world's elite courses. The course's construction involved moving an astonishing amount of earth and importing soil to create the lush playing surfaces, a monumental feat for its time. This pioneering spirit and commitment to excellence have been maintained throughout its decades of operation, solidifying the Mauna Kea Golf Course's legacy as a true cornerstone of Hawaiian golf.

Course Layout & Design

Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s architectural philosophy, often described as 'heroic golf,' is on full display at the Mauna Kea Golf Course. His designs are characterized by bold strategic bunkering, expansive and often undulating greens, and a clear demand for thoughtful shot-making. At Mauna Kea, Jones Sr. masterfully integrated these elements with the Big Island's unique environment. The course flows seamlessly from the foothills of the colossal Mauna Kea volcano towards the dramatic oceanfront.

Golfers will encounter wide, inviting fairways that deceptively lead to strategically placed hazards, demanding precision off the tee. The greens are renowned for their subtle breaks and challenging contours, requiring a deft touch with the putter. The routing guides players through diverse microclimates, from sheltered inland holes framed by ancient lava flows and vibrant tropical flora to exposed stretches where the Pacific trade winds become a significant factor. Each hole presents a distinct challenge, encouraging players to utilize every club in their bag and to think critically about their approach. The course's design ensures that while it is undoubtedly a championship test, it remains immensely enjoyable, offering breathtaking vistas at every turn.

Signature Holes

While every hole at Mauna Kea Golf Course offers its own unique charm and challenge, a few stand out as truly iconic. The undisputed star, and arguably one of the most famous par-3s in the world, is Hole 3. This awe-inspiring hole demands a tee shot over a vast chasm of crashing Pacific Ocean waves to a green perched precariously on a rocky promontory. The sheer drama of the shot, with the deep blue expanse of the ocean stretching to the horizon and the sound of the surf echoing below, is an experience that transcends golf. Club selection is paramount, as the trade winds can transform a seemingly simple shot into a formidable test. Successfully landing on the green feels like a triumph, and even a missed shot provides an unforgettable memory of Hawaii's raw power and beauty. The Mauna Kea Golf Course's 3rd hole is a photographic marvel and a bucket-list experience for golfers worldwide.

Beyond the legendary third, the course continues to deliver memorable moments. Hole 11, a challenging par-5, perfectly exemplifies Jones Sr.'s 'heroic' design. This hole often plays into the prevailing wind, demanding long, accurate shots to navigate its strategic bunkering and undulating terrain. The approach shot to a well-guarded green requires precision, often with a backdrop of the sparkling Pacific, reminding players of the course's stunning location. The strategic placement of hazards and the subtle elevation changes make this a true three-shot par-5 for most, rewarding thoughtful course management and well-executed strikes.

Another standout is Hole 13, a dramatic par-4 that plays downhill towards the ocean, offering panoramic views. The tee shot here requires careful consideration to avoid strategically placed bunkers and lava outcroppings. The approach shot, often played with a mid-iron, is to a green that appears to drop off into the Pacific, creating a thrilling visual and a demanding finish to the hole.

Playing Conditions & Difficulty

The Mauna Kea Golf Course is renowned for its immaculate playing conditions, with lush, perfectly manicured fairways and greens that roll true and fast. However, make no mistake: this is an 'expert' level course that presents a formidable challenge to even the most seasoned golfers. The primary factors contributing to its difficulty are the strategic genius of Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s design and the ever-present Hawaiian elements. The Big Island's trade winds, while offering a refreshing breeze, can significantly impact ball flight and club selection, requiring golfers to adapt their game on the fly. The large, undulating greens demand precision with approach shots and a keen eye for subtle breaks when putting. Lava rock outcroppings, while beautiful, serve as unforgiving hazards, penalizing errant shots. Forced carries over natural ravines and water features add to the strategic demands. Despite its difficulty, the Mauna Kea Golf Course is fair, rewarding well-executed shots and strategic course management. It's a true championship test that will push your game and leave you with a profound sense of accomplishment.

Playing here at Mauna Kea Golf Course was a really great experience. The staff are amazing, helpful and take care of everything for you. The golf course is ridiculously beautiful. The cost is not cheap, but worth it. I recommend starting early, it’s not busy in the early mornings. I was so happy from the beautiful scenery, I played better golf than I normally do and got a 102. When I checked the slope rating of 144, I was happy with my score. It is hilly with challenging placement of greens and you could be spending some time “at the beach” due to the numerous sand traps. I recommend watching the YouTube walk through of each hole they placed online up front. Anytime I come to visit the big island, playing at Mauna Kea will be on the list of things to do. Valet parking is included at the hotel, so be sure to stop by enjoy the restaurant on the ocean or even better, go swimming.

The residences at the Mauna Kea Resort on the Big Island, Hawaii is beautiful, are fully furnished with two or three bedroom rental townhomes. We found our stays there to be like home with every amenity you might need. Bathrooms are spacious with lux towels, hair dryers, lotions and shampoo’s. The kitchen just needs your cooking skills and food with comfortable outdoor furnishings and barbecue as well. They are situated within the golf course and are built on rolling hills where the vast views of the ocean and Maui off to the right are breathtaking. Although the golf course runs through the neighborhood, it is quiet, gated with exquisite palm, orange and lemon trees, bougainvillea and oleander eel to always be blooming. This is our third time at Kumulani residences and there rental included golf access, all the amenities at both the Westin and Mauna Kea resort in Kamuela. and are planning to return again soon. Both the beaches at the resorts. They have a resident parrot at the Mauna Kea resort named Mango. Despite the renovations in progress currently (2024 and part of 2025) we were able to access the hotel restaurants, gym and other amenities. The staff are simply the sweetest, always smiling, always with a mahalo. Since it’s about 45 minute drive from Kona north and at least 35 minutes to Waimea further north east, but sure to stop for groceries or gas on your way. However, there is a small market inside Mauna Kea Hotel with limited items, fresh coffee, and sandwiches etc, there are other coffee shops and restaurants which are excellent and the views can’t be beat. We enjoyed the beach and swimming in the ocean and walking the trail between the two resorts which follows along the ocean.

I've had better service at every Oahu Municipal course. The Kama'aina rate was said to be $125 over the phone, but the day of we were charged $185. Non-residents pay an eye watering $325. For that, you get zero service. I mean, none. After we paid, we walked out to the cart the bell desk brought our bags to. No starter, no hey welcome driving range is that way, nothing. We found the range by following some "club members," but there were no extra stalls set up for us, no bag stands, no balls. The lounge was "club members only" with a card swipe and no staff. With no snack window or restaurant, we were stuck with the 2 water bottles pre placed in the cart cooler that we also had to discover. The beer cart zipped passed us at the starter area without asking if we needed anything to start, but she did catch us 3-4 times throughout the round. As a member of an actual private country club on Oahu, I'd honestly be even more disgruntled as a member there than as a guest. The course is beautiful, but there are no hole markers. Almost drove past the first set of tee boxes. For this kind of money, they really need to offer more than a beer cart with a short list of options. Maybe hire some staff. I read on another review that they will give you an engraved bag tag at the end of your round. We had to ask, then had to ask for it to be engraved. Staff seemed like it was a bother. This place needs a serious restructure of staff. Just a few conversations, people able and willing to provide customer service, and this would have been a drastically better experience
